To Careers Advisers and Teachers

Your students are invited to visit UTS Engineering to take part in a one-week work experience activity. During their workplace research project they will investigate an engineering project, interview an engineer and write an article for a newsletter. This “news” item could

  • cover a UTS Engineering research project or program, or projects with industry

  • be a biography- “my life as an engineer” - of a UTS Engineer

  • show real examples of how engineering has been used to design solutions to problems

  • explain a tool/software/process that is used by engineers

  • be an activity or puzzle for inclusion in the newsletter

 This newsletter will be distributed to students in Years 5-10 interested in engineering. Some examples are linked below.

The aims of the workplace research project are to provide opportunities for Year 10 and 11 students to:

  • go through the process of "job application/interview process"

  • broaden the student’s understanding of engineering

  • see examples of how engineering is applied in real-life

  • inform them and their peers about engineering

  • practise skills that engineers need –

  • gathering facts

  • generating ideas

  • making decisions

  • solving problems

  • managing projects – eg timeline

  • writing reports

  • communicating with people

Job Advertisement

UTS Engineering is seeking a highly motivated work experience student to take up a position with its engineeringLinks program. This is a one week position located at the University of Technology Sydney, Broadway Campus.

The applicant will be involved in a workplace research project, which will include investigating an engineering project, interviewing an engineer, and writing an article for a newsletter.

The essential requirements for the position are:

  • An interest or a desire to learn about engineering

  • Good command of spoken and written English

  • Good communication skills

  • Computer skills

  • Ability to prioritise tasks and time management

  • Ability to gather facts

Desirable requirements, though not essential, are:

  • Ability to generate and use creative ideas

  • Ability to work in teams

  • Knowledge of OH&S requirements

To apply
