Career Talks

As part of their training in communication, engineering students at UTS are required to give an oral presentation to an appropriate audience. While some choose their peers as their audience, others elect to go to a school (sometimes even their old school) to talk about their engineering experiences and the special features of the course at UTS.

As a result of our 12 month engineering internship program, our students have an insight into engineering as a career option that is not obtained from straight academic programs. This allows them to give your students an excellent picture of the engineering workplace.

Telecommunications

There are many career paths that will lead to working with radio frequencies in telecommunications and/or scientific settings. Most of them can be grouped under the headings:

  • radio science
  • radio physics
  • radio astronomy
  • telecommunications engineering
  • radiology
  • radiography
  • astrophysics
  • wireless networking
  • remote control toys

Understanding electromagnetic radiation also provides links to all sorts of areas that include:

  • dB relationships with the Richter scale and seismology
  • dB relationships with Hearing and acoustics

Use a variety of web crawlers and web browsers (e.g. Google and Anzwers) by using the terms above as search words. Find out

  • the name of the career
  • the training required
  • the prerequisite subjects you would need to train for that career
  • the approximate salary range
  • the number of jobs likely to be available
  • where you would work and live
  • the sort of work these people are involved in each day
  • other factors that would lead you to decide whether or not you would like to be involved in this career.
