The Faculty of Engineering is committed to producing graduates who are not only technically competent, but understand the requirements of professional practice and are confident in a practitioner role. An important part of this commitment is the need to direct students’ attention to the international and global aspects of modern engineering practice and to prepare them for this aspect of their professional life. Linking overseas study and work experiences is a key strategy in the Faculty’s approach to this task.  In its educational programs, the Faculty seeks to emphasize the international dimension of engineering and of professional development and practice.

Engineering is an international profession, and international interactions are essential to the development and professional currency of any engineering school. The Faculty of Engineering has vigorous international partnerships in all its areas of activity and works to build relationships with international as well as Australian leaders in engineering internship and practice-based education and research.

Opportunities for international exchange are available to all students, not only those doing the combined degree of Bachelor of Engineering Bachelor of Arts in International Studies. All undergraduate students are strongly encouraged to undertake international placements as part of their academic program, for full credit.  Subject to conditions, students gain full academic credit for studies completed at an overseas university and may obtain overseas work experience which satisfies UTS engineering course requirements.

Many of the overseas universities with which we have exchange agreements teach engineering courses in English, while also providing UTS students with the opportunity to study the local language. So it is not always necessary to be fluent in another language in order to enjoy an exchange. It is also possible to study a foreign language for credit as an elective in your degree program.

Options available for UTS Engineering Students

Bachelor of Engineering Diploma in Engineering Practice

You have the following options available to you:

  •  Go to a university in an English speaking country and study in English

  • Go to a non-English speaking country and study in English (for example Japan, Sweden, Finland, France

  • Go to a non-English speaking country and study in the local language

The structure of the new BE DipEngPrac enables you to use your elective subjects to study a language and culture other than English for credit. Such a study program can provide you with the foundation language skills necessary to undertake an exchange program in a university where engineering is not taught in English. In your first semester on exchange you would normally not be capable of learning engineering. However, you are able to undertake an intensive study of the local language, and sit in on engineering classes. Some of the countries where exchanges are possible include Chile, Canada, The People’s Republic of China, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Sweden.

Initial enquiries about exchange programs should be directed to the Institute for International Studies - http://www.iis.uts.edu.au/.

For enquiries concerning engineering studies while overseas please contact the Director, International Engineering Program, Email: Paul.Maloney@uts.edu.au.

Bachelor of Engineering Bachelor of Arts in International Studies Diploma in Engineering Practice

The purpose of the program is to produce graduates who have exceptional engineering ability and the capability of applying their skills to engineering tasks internationally as well as in Australia. Graduates are expected to have both the competency and confidence appropriate to leadership roles in the practice of professional engineering, in an international or global environment, in which cultural sensitivity and understanding are important factors.

The program is directed at student engineers who have interests in developing greater cultural awareness, including language studies, of the non-English speaking world, in a way which will place their university studies in professional engineering in an international setting.

For further details concerning this combined degree program please refer to the Faculty of Engineering Handbook at www.handbook.uts.edu.au/eng/index.html.

The Faculty welcomes overseas students, both through exchange programs and as candidates for UTS degrees, and expects to recruit increasing numbers of international students to its undergraduate and graduate programs. These students provide and essential and welcome internationalizing influence, and help Australian students and staff to become more fluent in their international interactions.
