Casual Teaching Positions
The Faculty of Engineering has ongoing opportunities
for casual teaching across all undergraduate and postgraduate engineering
disciplines. We would welcome expressions of interest from interest applicants.
You should email your contact details, along with a
brief resume and details of your areas of expertise and availability, to
CasualAcademics@eng.uts.edu.au.
We will then add your details to our database of
potential casual academic staff (we will keep this on file for at least 2 years
unless we hear otherwise from you - you should contact us again if any of the
details change). This information will then be available to our Program Heads
and subject coordinators, who will contact you directly if a possible
opportunity arises for you to teach in relevant subjects.
Postgraduate Research Scholarship
?Debonding Failure of CFRP Strengthened Concrete
Structures?
The repair of damaged structures and strengthening of existing structures has
become a research priority due to the billions of dollars of aging Australian
infrastructure. In the last 10 years or so,
the use of lightweight fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) and, in particular, carbon
fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) as an alternative to steel plates has been
investigated for repair and strengthening applications.
A number of research studies in the field of
repair using CFRP have been undertaken. However, attempts at developing rational
models for the various modes of failure have not correlated well with the
experimental data. Another challenge of designing for CFRP strengthening is to
ensure adequate ductility of the repaired member, as CFRPs are elastic-brittle.
The general aims of this research project are to provide the analytical tools
and baseline experimental data for engineers to safely design carbon fibre
reinforced plastic (CFRP) reinforced concrete (RC) beams. Specifically the study
will investigate CFRP debonding. The project will:
·
Experimentally determine the
ultimate strength, ductility and softening characteristics of large RC beams
strengthened in shear with CFRPs failing due to debonding of the CFRP from the
parent concrete. The CFRP strengthening is applied to undamaged or damaged RC
beams with the strengthened beam being subjected to either monotonic or cyclic
loading.
·
Formulate models and guidelines for
the use of CFRPs in design practice.
Applications are invited for a project-specific scholarship (stipend) leading
towards a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree, on the subject ?Debonding
Failure of CFRP Strengthened Concrete Structures? to start in 2004. The
project is offered by the Infrastructure and the Environment Group, Faculty of
Engineering, at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS), and will be jointly
supervised by Dr. S.T. Smith (UTS) and Associate Professor S.J. Foster (The
University of New South Wales) and will be funded by an ARC Discovery Grant.
Bright, enthusiastic applicants are encouraged to apply. The successful
applicant will receive an annual stipend of AUS$20,000 tax free, for three years
for the PhD. Only one scholarship is available to an Australian citizen or a
permanent resident. The applicant must possess an appropriate Honours 1 or high
2/1 (or equivalent) undergraduate degree or have completed a research masters
degree.
Prospective applicants should make contact with Dr. Smith.
