Professional year in Engineering

From 2012, the UTS Student Services Unit will offer the Engineering Education Australia Professional Year in Engineering Program. Engineering Education Australia, a wholly owned subsidiary of Engineers Australia offers the only government specified Professional Year in Engineering.

Why do the Professional Year in Engineering?

Completing a professional year program will enable you to:

  • Undertake an engineering industry placement
  • Network with industry professionals
  • Develop your employability in the Australian Engineering field

What is the Professional Year in Engineering Program?

The Professional Year is a 44 week 'job-preparedness' program aimed at equipping participants with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian Engineering workplace.

The program is a structured professional development program combining formal learning and workplace experience. A Professional Year will:

  • familiarise participants with the expectations of Australian engineering workplace as well as the Australian employment market
  • help you communicate more effectively and professionally in the Australian workplace with colleagues, managers and clients
  • include an industry work experience placement to educate participants about all aspects of work practices in an Australian company.


Industry Work Experience Placement

Participants in the Engineering Professional Year Program will be placed in an industry placement lasting up to 14 weeks.

This placement will provide participants with the opportunity to enhance their existing work ready skills and develop new skills. Placements will be in roles that reflect your engineering discipline area.

Modules

Participants will undertake modules that aim to develop your:

• Work readiness as an engineer
• Communication skills in a professional environment
• Performance in an Australian workplace

There will be a strong emphasis on practical learning that will help prepare you for your industry placement, then a job in engineering.
