HSC Bonus Scheme

Although your ATAR can be a good indicator of a successful career in engineering we also know, from our experience in the education of professional engineers, that other factors also play a significant role.

Student motivation, interpersonal skills, design talent and technical aptitude are just a few aspects which can contribute quite strongly to both performance within an engineering degree and your success as a professional engineer.

The HSC Bonus Scheme takes these other factors into account when assessing applications.

How does it work?

Bonus points

Bonus points are added to your ATAR on the basis of certain subjects taken in the HSC.

Your ATAR may be adjusted, by giving you up to 5 bonus points based, as a result of your performance in certain HSC subjects that have a connection to engineering, these subjects are:

  • Chemistry
  • Design and Technology
  • Engineering Studies
  • English Advanced Extension 1 or Extension 2
  • Industrial Technology
  • Information Processes and Technology
  • Information Technology
  • Physics
  • Software Design and Development
  • Mathematics Extension 1 or Extension 2

UTS: Year 12 Bonus Scheme has more information about how bonus points work.

Questionnaire

If your ATAR falls short of the course cut-off (normally mid 80s) subsequent to bonus points being added, your ranking can be adjusted based on the submission of a questionnaire.

The questionnaire will be evaluated based on the following criteria your:

  • motivation
  • interest in engineering
  • affinity for the engineering discipline

Even if you believe that you will receive a high ATAR, we strongly recommend that you still complete the questionnaire.

For Autumn 2013, the questionnaire:

  • opens early August 2012, and
  • close Sunday 2  December 2012.

The online questionnaire has closed for 2012 intake.
