Major Problem Survey - Autumn 2010

The Major Problem Survey is now open.

It is open from 19 March until 26 March 2010.

The Major Problem Survey gives students an opportunity to identify major problems with

particular subjects or the course in general, earlier in the semester to enable the Subject Coordinator to address any problems.  A more comprehensive survey will be conducted at the end of the semester.

The survey is available online, http://start.it.uts.edu.au/mpsurvey

The survey is an anonymous submission.

Although you must log into the system to access the survey, there is no indication as to who submitted it.  Once submitted, the survey is posted to me in an email with no name attached to it. The survey will be submitted to the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning (Engineering).

All responses to problems arising from the Survey will be viewed and actioned by the Associate Dean Teaching and Learning (Engineering).

A copy of the response will be posted on http://www.eng.uts.edu.au/current_students/index.htm#LBN

approximately two weeks from last day of submission.

The survey is ONLY for students enrolled in subjects from UTS: Engineering programs.

Last day to submit a survey will be 5.00pm on Friday 26 March 2010.

Please ignore this message if you do not have any problem with your subjects.

Please Do Not Reply to this email.  All student related issues should be forwarded to the

Building 1 Student Centre or via the UTS helpdesk:  http://servicedesk.uts.edu.au

e-Request for Study Plan/Enrolment issues:  http://www.sau.uts.edu.au/enrolment/e-request/

Subject changes in ICT/CSE/Software/Telecommunication Majors

Readiness Survey

To help identify those students who may benefit from additional help in some areas of study, every CURRENT student wanting to enroll in  33130 Mathematics Modelling 1 must complete the compulsory Readiness Survey in Maths before semester begins.

Students who do not successfully complete these tests will be withdrawn from the relevant Core or Foundation subjects they are enrolled in.

Student Guide

A guide for all students which provides information on the Faculty, subjects, assessment, contacting staff, and a wealth of other important information. All students are expected to be familiar with the information in the guide. Click here to view the Student Guide.

Timetables

Late in each year (usually in October) you will be asked to choose your subjects for the next year. The Faculty attempts to ensure flexibility in our programs by ensuring that every subject (with a few minor exceptions) is offered in an evening time slot at least once every four semesters, as well as offering subjects in alternative patterns such as block mode or distance mode delivery.  The actual timetable is generated automatically and is available at: http://timetable.uts.edu.au

Prizes, Competitions and Awards

The Faculty offers a number of awards and prizes for outstanding performance.  Details of these can be found at www.uts.edu.au/study/scholarships

Dean's List

The Dean's List is one of the Faculty initiatives to recognise outstanding undergraduate students' performance. The Dean's List is produced on a yearly basis and the criteria for membership to the list is also revised annually to ensure that the areas of performance that the Faculty wish to reward are consistent with the objectives of the undergraduate programs. Typically students meet one of three criteria for inclusion on the list.

1. Academic achievement: Generally, to qualify for inclusion on the Dean's List under this criterion a student must have completed a minimum number of credit points, and achieved a WAM for the previous year above a certain threshold (which may vary from year to year, but would typically be between 70 and 80).

2. Excellence in Engineering Practice: Generally, to qualify for inclusion on the Dean's List under this criterion a student must have completed a minimum number of credit points, have a WAM above some threshold in the previous year, and been awarded a Distinction or High Distinction in an Engineering Practice Review subject during the previous year.

3. Awarded a Cooperative Scholarship: To qualify for inclusion on the Dean's List under this criterion a student must have been awarded a scholarship during the year in which the list is produced.

Students who are included for membership to the Dean's list will receive a letter from the Dean and are encouraged to record this achievement in their curriculum vitae.

Are you getting close to graduating?

You may wish to confirm with us that your expectations of what else you have to do to graduate are aligned with ours, particularly if you have been caught up in a major course change. You can arrange this with the Building 1 Student Centre.

Archived Handbooks

Archived handbooks can be accessed by clicking here and scrolling down to the bottom.

Electives

Electives can be grouped to form a sub-major which is printed on your transcript when you graduate. You can do apply to do any subject offered in the university by submitting an e-Request. Note that subjects assume certain knowledge as specified by pre-requisites - you must have the necessary prior knowledge. If in doubt, talk with the subject coordinator.

Some of the options you might consider are:
 - A
PSP Project
 - Specialist subjects in your field of practice offered by the Graduate School of Engineering (See the faculty handbook but check the rules first)
 - Hands on skill subjects at TAFE
 - Subjects offered by other Faculties at UTS
- Undergraduate Engineering subjects from other majors

The Professional Service Project  (PSP)

This subject allows you to gain an appreciation of the voluntary service obligations and non-financial rewards associated with the achievement of professional status.  You will be encouraged to develop a balanced portfolio of service activities to meet subject requirements. For this reason restrictions may be placed on repeating the same service activity. To complete the requirements of this subject you must undertake one or more service projects.  Full details are available here.

The Capstone Project

This is the crowning glory of your achievement at UTS. You need to prepare well in advance. From the Capstone Project link you can navigate to find everything you need to.

The Engineering Practice Program

The Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice has an Internship requirement. Internships involve a subject done before the work experience, the work experience itself, and a subject done after the work experience. Find out more about the program here. If you started at UTS Autumn, you should enrol in Engineering Practice Preview 1 in Spring as this will keep your options as open as possible for when you do your first internship should an opportunity.

Industry Partnering Unit

Students are required to find their own placements, however the Industry Partnering Unit (IPU) assists students in obtaining internships. The IPU staff maintain contact with industry, register students' intentions of seeking work experience, advise on the preparation of resumes and advise on the availability of work opportunities in Australia and overseas.  Students seeking assistance through the IPU should register on I2MS each semester preceding their intended period of work.

Please note that students who have completed the internship requirement for their course  will not be able to register with the IPU. However, we do encourage students to seek additional experience independently.

Contacting Academic Staff

UTS Staff Directory

Academics within the Faculty have a diverse and complex set of responsibilities, including not only undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, but also research, subject development, project and research student supervision, administration, professional development, consulting, etc.

Like you, they often find the need to focus on what they are doing without interruption. We do however recognise that you have the right to expect academic staff to respond to appropriate queries in a timely fashion, and be available for consultation.

With this in mind, all academic staff have been asked to provide information, at the beginning of each subject guide, about their availability. In particular, they will let you know their LDC and office consulting times, and whether they will respond to emails and/or phone messages. You should especially note that some staff may prefer to answer email enquiries, whereas others prefer questions in person rather than via email and so may not respond to your email enquiries. In this case however, they will ensure more flexible consulting times (including times in the late afternoon for part-timers).
