Sponsor a Scholarship

INDUSTRY

UTS:Engineering in conjunction with Industry Partners have been awarding scholarships to outstanding school leavers over the last 14 years. This has enabled the Faculty to attract outstanding students into engineering and in turn to deliver exceptional graduates for positions in industry.

The cornerstone of the scholarship program is the UTS:Engineering Cooperative Scholarship Program which concentrates on attracting the top school leavers into the UTS:Engineering degree programs. This is the Scholarship entry level for sponsors and then allows additional scholarship options.

In general not enough top school leavers opt to take engineering courses and in addition to encouraging students into engineering, an important purpose of the Cooperative Scholarship Program is to attract our share of the top students who have selected to study engineering. This gives the students the additional advantage of a practice-based engineering education, thereby enhancing the quality of engineers entering the workforce.

The scholarship schemes available for sponsorship are:

1. UTS:Engineering Cooperative Scholarship Program

This program concentrates on encouraging top students into UTS:Engineering followed by joint training with industry during their degree to provide excellent graduates for sponsor organisations. The scheme is highly competitive and provides a tax-free scholarship for the scholars’ first year of study. The current cost of sponsoring a student in this program is $13,950 per year. These scholars must perform well throughout the year to gain the full scholarship. Satisfactory progress is a minimum of a credit average with no fail results.

Sponsors develop a relationship with their named scholar and would normally employ them in a paid internship during their second year and potentially again during their fourth year.  Scholars are also keen to complete an industry-related final year thesis (Capstone Project) before moving to full employment as a graduate engineer.

2. UTS:Engineering Cooperative Scholarship + Scholarships for 2nd and 4th Year

This program is an extension of the cooperative program. The organisation can support a cooperative student in his/her first year, and then as well offer this student (or other additional top performers) participation in a second year and/or fourth year scholarship program which includes a six-month internship with the sponsor.  Making these scholarships attractive from a monetary point of view allows sponsors to attract the best students for their internship program. These scholarships are also tax-free.

 3. Full Degree Scholarships

These scholarships allow sponsors to support scholars over the whole five-year period of their degree and have them join their organisations for six-month internships during the second and fourth years. The typical cost of a full degree scholarship is $54,000.

This arrangement allows the sponsor to build a long term relationship with the scholar, giving the student a distinctive advantage when moving into the sponsors’ graduate program; or to provide a means of influencing and then capturing a top student as a graduate engineer for their organisation.

Selection Process

Scholars are selected by interview each November and the criteria used for selection include:

  • Commitment to UTS and a career in engineering

  • Leadership ability

  • Strong communication skills

  • Creativity and problem solving

  • Community involvement

Applicants are ranked at the interviews and offered scholarships in that order, providing they achieve a UAI of at least 90 in the HSC.  The UAI achieved above 90 does not effect their ranking as UTS:Engineering consider the attributes assessed during interview to be of equal importance to students’ academic achievement.  Our experience shows that a UAI cut off of 90 is a suitable selection point.  Sponsors are invited to attend the student interviews and be involved in the selection process.

Other Information:

  • A scholars/sponsors forum is held in April/May each year to provide an introduction setting for the new scholars.

  • Keeping the top scholars within the sponsor’s organisation during their internships increases the likelihood of these students becoming graduate employees of the sponsoring organisation. Two thirds of UTS:Engineering students stay with the organisation that participated in his/her first or second internship.

  • Statistics show that 94% of UTS:Engineering graduates are employed as professional engineers at the time of graduation.*

  • The scholarship program is an excellent way of securing the right graduates early on.
