The Scholarship Program is not only designed to provide financial support, it also promotes your development as a future leader in engineering through partnerships between the university and engineering industry. You will have the opportunity to meet industry leaders early on in your career and establish relationships with them. There are a range of scholarships that you can apply for: Engineering Cooperative Scholarships There are up to 20 industry sponsored scholarships available from UTS:Engineering each year. These scholarships are not available for a combined degree. RTA Full Degree Scholarships An RTA Full Degree Scholarship provides you with financial support for the full duration of your studies in the Bachelor of Engineering (Civil), Diploma in Engineering Practice (5 years full time). You will complete both your internships with the RTA. There are six Full Degree scholarships available this year for the Civil Major only. Three of these will be awarded to Rural students who are therefore particularly encouraged to apply - these are current school leavers who reside in areas designated as rural/regional NSW and the ACT. Female students are also particularly encouraged to apply as the RTA wish to divide the scholarships equally among male and female applicants. These scholarships are not available for a combined degree. Howden Scholarship for Mature-age Students Howden are offering one UTS:Engineering scholarship in 2011 to mature-age applicants who have listed the Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical), Diploma in Engineering Practice as first preference in their UAC application. Please note, the scholarship is only open to those with the mechanical major as their first preference.
The Howden Engineering Scholarship not only
provides you with financial support but also gives you an opportunity to
complete your two six month periods of internship with the company. Engineering Equity Scholarships There are four Engineering Equity Scholarships available. These scholarships provide you with financial support if you have experienced long-term educational disadvantage/financial hardship due to any of the following: > Personal illness/disability > English language difficulty > Rural or isolated school > Difficult family circumstances > Indigenous Australian The Scholarships available in this category are: Linden Little Engineering Equity Scholarship This scholarship is available to all engineering students completing the Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice. Scholarship has been generously
established by the John Heine Memorial
Foundation with the goal of increasing
the participation of women in
Engineering as a non-traditional area of
study. This Scholarship aims to support
applicants who have experienced
financial hardship; other types of
educational disadvantage may also be
considered. The scholarship is open to
female applicants for a UTS
undergraduate Engineering course (for
both current and non-current school
leavers). One scholarship is available
in 2010.
$85,000 will be provided over 5 years to cover HECS fees and some living costs. For more information, click here. UTS Engineering and IT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship This scholarship is offered to a high achieving student of Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent commencing first year of the Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice. Up to two scholarships are offered each year. The value of the scholarship is $25,000 tax free over the five years of the BE, DipEngPrac. You will need to apply for an Equity Scholarship through UAC. Click here for details. VALUE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP Financial The financial value of each Cooperative Scholarship is $13 000 tax free for one year (your first year). The RTA Full Degree and Rural Scholarships are valued at $48 000 tax free over five years. The John Heine Women in Engineering Equity Scholarship is valued at $85,000 over 5 years. The Linden Little Engineering Equity Scholarship is valued at $27 000 tax free over two years. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scholarship is valued at $25,000 tax free over five years of the BE, DipEngPrac. Relationships The real value of a UTS:Engineering Scholarship is the opportunity for you to meet, establish links and develop relationships with our industry sponsors facilitated by the Faculty during the first year of your degree. These early contacts often become supportive employers, interested in the development of your future. There’s no obligation on either side, so you can also retain the flexibility and freedom of choosing your own work opportunities during your internships and when you graduate (RTA scholars will need to take internships with the RTA). APPLICATION AND INTERVIEWS Criteria To apply, you need to: > For most scholarships, you need to be a successful High School candidate in the current year’s NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent) or have successfully completed the NSW Higher School Certificate (or equivalent) in 2009 and taken a gap year* in 2010. The successful candidate will generally have a minimum ATAR of 90 (RTA Rural and Engineering Equity scholarship applicants are not required to achieve a minimum ATAR of 90) > be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident > meet the admission requirements for the five-year Bachelor of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Practice * If you have studied a university or TAFE diploma level course or above during this gap year, you are not eligible to apply for UTS:Engineering scholarships listed above. Only applications submitted on the appropriate application form in this brochure or online and submitted by the closing date, will be considered. NB: those applying for an Engineering Equity Scholarship MUST submit the UTS:Engineering Scholarship Application Form and apply for an Equity Scholarship through UAC. Applications are short listed by a panel of University staff. Students who are short listed will be invited to attend an interview. Interviews for Equity Scholarships will take place in January/February 2011. Attendance at your interview is essential if you are to be considered for a scholarship. Interview dates cannot be re-scheduled. CONDITIONS All scholarship holders are expected to maintain a credit average during their studies. Conditions applying to the individual scholarships will be consistent with this information and advised when the offer is made. IMPORTANT DATES > Scholarship applications are now closed. > Interviews – held on Tuesday 30 November 2010. Interviews for Equity Scholarships will take place in January/February 2011. > Offers – Provisional offers are expected to be made in mid December 2010. Confirmation of provisional offers are made after notification of HSC results. SCHOLARSHIPS FOR CURRENT STUDENTS UTS:Engineering maintains close contact with industry who from time to time offer scholarship opportunities to second and fourth year UTS:Engineering students.
